In 1972, the National Hockey League welcomed two new franchises, introducing professional hockey to Atlanta and Denver. The team based in Denver adopted the name Colorado Rockies and their home games were hosted at the McNichols Sports Arena. Initially, the Rockies faced significant challenges, placing last in their division for the first three seasons consecutively. Despite these early struggles, 1975 marked a significant milestone as the team clinched a playoff berth for the first time, though their journey was cut short in the preliminary round. Continuing to face difficulties through the late 1970s and into the early 1980s, the team's performance remained below expectations, with victories never surpassing the 35-game mark in any season.
By 1982, a turning point arrived when the Rockies were acquired by an investment group helmed by Peter Karmanos. Under new ownership, the team was relocated to Quebec City and rebranded as the Nordiques. This move heralded a change in fortunes, with the team securing a place in the playoffs six times within their first eight years in Quebec. Despite this improved performance, a playoff series victory remained elusive.
The narrative took another dramatic turn in 1995 when Bill Comrie led a group to purchase the Nordiques. Comrie orchestrated the team's return to Denver, reestablishing the franchise as the Colorado Avalanche. This new chapter began with remarkable success, as the Avalanche clinched the Stanley Cup in their debut season. Their winning streak continued, securing additional Stanley Cup victories in 2001 and again in 2022.
Since their relocation to Denver, the Avalanche have emerged as one of the NHL's most triumphant teams. Their accolades include three Stanley Cup championships and nineteen playoff appearances across 28 seasons, underscoring their dominance and resilience in the league.
