The state of Florida welcomed the Tampa Bay Lightning as its second NHL franchise in 1992, enhancing the state's representation in the league. Originating in Tampa, the team stepped in to fill the gap left behind when the Quebec Nordiques moved to Colorado. The Lightning's first season was challenging, as they finished with the league's worst record and became the first NHL team to allow over 400 goals in a season.
In 2004, the Lightning achieved a major milestone by winning their first Stanley Cup championship, overcoming the Calgary Flames in a thrilling seven-game series. The team, led by luminaries such as Martin St. Louis, Brad Richards, and Vincent Lecavalier, captivated fans with their dynamic offense and thrilling gameplay. Despite this peak, the team entered a downturn, failing to reach the playoffs for the next three seasons.
The revival of the Lightning began in 2015 with the acquisition of talented players like Steven Stamkos, Nikita Kucherov, and Andrei Vasilevskiy. These additions propelled the team back into the competitive arena, culminating in their second Stanley Cup victory in 2020 against the Dallas Stars, followed by a back-to-back win in 2021 with a clean sweep against the Montreal Canadiens. The 2022-2023 season saw the Lightning clinching their third Stanley Cup victory, setting a record as the first team to win the championship three consecutive times since the New York Islanders in the early 1980s.
