Winnipeg Jets History & Overview

The Winnipeg Jets, hailing from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, joined the National Hockey League (NHL) in 1972 and competed until 1996. They were introduced during the league's expansion phase in the early '70s, alongside other new teams such as the New York Islanders and the Atlanta Flames. Under the ownership of Barry Shenkarow, the Jets played their home games in the Winnipeg Arena, donning team colors of kelly green, white, and gold.

In their initial years, the Jets proved to be a formidable force, securing a spot in the playoffs for seven out of their first nine seasons. Their pinnacle achievement came in 1985 when they advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals, only to be defeated by the Edmonton Oilers after five games. However, the late 1980s to the early 1990s saw a downturn in the team's performance, with a disappointing six-season streak of missing the playoffs. By 1996, financial and operational challenges led to the sale of the team to a group led by Richard Burke, resulting in the relocation of the team to Phoenix, Arizona, where they were rebranded as the Phoenix Coyotes.

This move left the city of Winnipeg without an NHL team for a span of 15 years. The tide turned in 2011 when the Atlanta Thrashers were bought by True North Sports & Entertainment and subsequently moved to Winnipeg. This marked the rebirth of the Winnipeg Jets, initiating their participation in the 2011-12 season. The revitalized Jets have shown remarkable progress, making playoff appearances in their first six seasons and hosting the NHL All-Star Game in both 2016 and 2020, once again igniting the spirit of ice hockey among the Winnipeg faithful.
