Located in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, the Ottawa Senators represent the city in the National Hockey League (NHL) competing within the Atlantic Division. Their origins trace back to the Ottawa Hockey Club in 1883, marking them as the world's oldest continuously operating professional hockey team. Throughout their history, the Senators have secured 11 Stanley Cups, a record that surpasses any other team in the NHL.
As founding members of the NHL in 1917, the Senators embarked on their inaugural season that same year. Their first Stanley Cup triumph came in 1920, setting off a period of dominance where they garnered a total of 11 Cups over 34 years. The 1927 season saw their most recent Stanley Cup victory, and since then, the team has not advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals.
Post-1927, the Senators experienced a steep decline, leading to the team folding in 1934. The franchise was rejuvenated in 1990 as part of an effort to expand the NHL into the United States, and the new Senators team hit the ice for the 1992-93 season. This resurgence led to a period of considerable success within the league.
The team has claimed the Presidents' Trophy twice, in the 2002-03 and 2005-06 seasons, and made it to the Stanley Cup Finals in both 2007 and 2017. Despite losing on these two occasions, the Senators have maintained their status as one of the NHL's most beloved teams, backed by a fervent and sizable fan base.
