Located in Buffalo, New York, the Buffalo Sabres are a professional ice hockey team competing in the National Hockey League (NHL). They play within the Eastern Conference and belong to the Atlantic Division. The inaugural season for the Sabres was in 1970–71, following the NHL's decision to expand and introduce the sport to larger markets that previously did not host NHL teams.
The establishment of the team in 1970 came under the leadership of Seymour Knox III and Northrup R. Knox, inspired after the league's expansion doubled its size from six to 12 teams. The name "Sabres" is derived from the nickname of the 10th Cavalry Regiment, known as the "Buffalo Soldiers," which was based at Fort Riley, Kansas, during the American Civil War.
Throughout its history, the Sabres have captured the President's Trophy once, in the 1979–80 season, marking their best regular-season record. Despite reaching the Stanley Cup Finals three times, in the years of 1975, 1999, and 2007, they have yet to win the championship.
Over the years, the Sabres roster has featured prominent players such as Gilbert Perreault, René Robert, Danny Gare, Rick Martin, Tom Barrasso, Dominik Hasek, Pat LaFontaine, Alexander Mogilny, Derek Roy, and Jack Eichel.
