The Edmonton Oilers picked up a 4-1 preseason win against the Calgary Flames at Rogers Place on Saturday, led by multi-point performances from Kasperi Kapanen and Connor McDavid. Both forwards recorded a goal and an assist to help Edmonton control the contest on home ice.
Edmonton broke through late in the opening period on special teams. Zach Hyman beat Calgary goaltender Dustin Wolf with a wrist shot on the power play at 16:46, converting passes from McDavid and Evan Bouchard. McDavid then doubled the advantage at 7:55 of the second period by sending a snap shot past Wolf off feeds from Leon Draisaitl and Vasily Podkolzin. Edmonton expanded the margin further when defenseman Ryan Shea scored on a slap shot at 13:26 of the second period, assisted by Kapanen and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins.
Calgary answered midway through the final frame with an extra skater. Matt Coronato snapped a shot into the net on the power play at 9:06 of the third period, with assists credited to Matvei Gridin and Joel Farabee. Edmonton quickly responded less than two minutes later to secure the three-goal margin. Kapanen scored on a wrist shot at 10:52 of the third period, assisted by Nugent-Hopkins and Mattias Ekholm, to finish off the scoring.
Oilers goaltender Devon Levi stopped 23 of 24 shots to earn the victory, backed by an Edmonton penalty kill that finished 2 for 3 on the night. Wolf stopped 24 of 28 shots in the loss for the Flames. Edmonton capitalized on its lone power-play chance of the game and blocked 23 shots in front of Levi. Both teams return to action against the Minnesota Wild, with the Oilers hosting Minnesota on Tuesday, October 20, and the Flames hosting the Wild on Thursday, October 22.
