Matvei Gridin recorded two goals and an assist to lead the Calgary Flames to a 5-2 victory against the Toronto Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Saddledome on Monday night.
Calgary struck twice in quick succession midway through the first period. Gridin opened the scoring at 10:05 on a wrist shot set up by Martin Pospisil and Simon Nemec. Just 1:45 later, Mikael Backlund scored on a wrist shot with assists from Matt Coronato and Joel Farabee to establish a 2-0 advantage for the Flames.
The Flames extended that lead 25 seconds into the second period when Gridin scored his second goal of the night on a power play. Toronto answered back later in the period when Easton Cowan redirected a tip-in past the goaltender at 12:54 off assists from Troy Stecher and Morgan Rielly. William Nylander brought the Maple Leafs within one goal at 6:06 of the third period with a snap shot, but Calgary sealed the outcome with empty-net wrist shots from Farabee at 18:35 and Pospisil at 19:21.
Calgary goaltender Devin Cooley made 26 saves on 28 shots and collected an assist on Gridin's power-play tally. Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 29 of 32 shots for Toronto. The Flames converted one of their five power-play chances, while the Maple Leafs went 0 for 2 with the man advantage.
The win pushed Calgary's winning streak to four games and moved the Flames to a 5-6-0 record on the season. Gridin's three-point performance marked the first meeting between the clubs this season. Toronto fell to 7-5-2 with the loss.
Both teams continue their schedules on Wednesday, October 28. The Flames visit the Edmonton Oilers, while the Maple Leafs travel to face the Seattle Kraken.
