Mackie Samoskevich scored the tiebreaking goal late in the third period as the Seattle Kraken defeated the Utah Mammoth 5-3 at Climate Pledge Arena on Thursday. Seattle preserved the victory despite Utah erasing a two-goal deficit earlier in the final frame.
Jordan Eberle opened the scoring for Seattle at 3:38 of the first period with a slap shot. Utah responded on the power play at 17:57 when Vincent Trocheck beat Philipp Grubauer on a snap shot. Just 26 seconds later, Matty Beniers deflected home a power-play goal to put the Kraken ahead 2-1 before the intermission. Brandon Montour widened the gap to 3-1 at 2:23 of the second period with a power-play slap shot.
Logan Cooley brought the Mammoth back into the contest during the third period. Cooley redirected a shot just 27 seconds into the period on the power play, then hammered a slap shot past Grubauer at 7:42 to even the score 3-3. Samoskevich answered for Seattle at 14:35, beating Karel Vejmelka with a wrist shot to restore the lead before Frederick Gaudreau sealed the victory with an unassisted empty-net goal at 19:00.
Grubauer turned aside 33 of 36 shots for the Kraken, while Vejmelka stopped 18 of 22 shots for Utah. Both power-play units capitalized on their opportunities, with the Kraken finishing 2 of 4 with the man advantage and the Mammoth scoring on 2 of their 3 power plays.
The win marks the second consecutive victory for the Kraken, improving their regular-season record to 7-3-1. Utah dropped to 7-4-0 overall and fell to 0-1 against Seattle in the season series.
Both clubs return to the ice on Saturday, October 24. The Mammoth host the Tampa Bay Lightning, while the Kraken host the Minnesota Wild.
