Matvei Michkov and Porter Martone each recorded a goal and an assist to lead the Philadelphia Flyers to a 3-1 victory over the Ottawa Senators on Saturday night at Xfinity Mobile Arena.
Following a scoreless opening frame, the Senators broke the tie at 5:55 of the second period. Drake Batherson took passes from Claude Giroux and Tim Stützle before beating Dan Vladar with a snap shot for his fourth goal of the season. Philadelphia responded just over three minutes later when Martone deflected home a pass from Michkov at 9:03 to make it 1-1.
Michkov gave Philadelphia the lead late in the second period on the man advantage. Set up by Martone and David Jiricek, Michkov scored on a snap shot at 18:33 for his fourth goal of the campaign. Ottawa pressed late in regulation, but Trevor Zegras secured the win with an empty-net wrist shot at 19:46 of the third period, assisted by Christian Dvorak and Sean Couturier.
Vladar earned the victory in net for the Flyers by stopping 25 of 26 shots. At the other end, Linus Ullmark took the loss for Ottawa after making 25 saves on 27 shots. Philadelphia converted one of three power-play opportunities, while Ottawa failed to score on both of its power plays.
The win improved Philadelphia's regular-season record to 1-6-3, ending a nine-game winless start to the campaign. Ottawa dropped to 6-3-0. The result also evened the season series between the teams at one win apiece, following Ottawa's 2-1 win on October 8.
The Flyers stay at home to host the Colorado Avalanche on Monday, October 19. The Senators return home to face the Florida Panthers on Wednesday, October 21.
