The Florida Panthers clinched their first-round playoff series with a 6-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 5 at Amerant Bank Arena. Three-point performances from Aleksander Barkov and Carter Verhaeghe propelled the Panthers into the second round as Florida won the best-of-seven matchup four games to one.
After a scoreless opening frame, Florida broke through 45 seconds into the second period when Verhaeghe scored on a wrist shot set up by Barkov and Niko Mikkola. Barkov doubled the lead at 12:38 with a shorthanded wrist shot assisted by Aaron Ekblad and Gustav Forsling. Tampa Bay responded 59 seconds later, as defenseman Victor Hedman converted a slap shot off feeds from Nikita Kucherov and Brandon Hagel to make it 2-1.
Florida pulled away with four unanswered goals in the third period. Barkov scored his second goal of the night on a wrist shot at 11:06 after passes from Matthew Tkachuk and Verhaeghe. Evan Rodrigues extended the advantage to 4-1 with a slap shot at 14:16, assisted by Kevin Stenlund and Vladimir Tarasenko. Verhaeghe and Mikkola capped the scoring with empty-net wrist shots in the final four minutes of regulation.
Sergei Bobrovsky earned the win in net for Florida, stopping 31 of 32 shots. Andrei Vasilevskiy made 33 saves on 37 shots for Tampa Bay. Neither team capitalized with the man advantage, as the Lightning went 0 for 3 on the power play and the Panthers finished 0 for 4 while yielding Barkov's shorthanded tally.
The victory concluded the series 4-1 in favor of the Panthers, who also won the regular-season series between the clubs two games to one. Tampa Bay's season ended after compiling a 45-29-8 regular-season record, while Florida advanced following its 52-24-6 regular season.
