The Ottawa Senators secured a 2-1 victory over the New York Islanders on Thursday at Canadian Tire Centre when Shane Pinto produced the lone goal of the shootout.

New York opened the scoring late in the first period. Matias Maccelli picked up an unassisted tally with a wrist shot at 19:48, putting the Islanders ahead 1-0 heading into the intermission.

Ottawa pulled even late in the second period. Ridly Greig converted a snap shot at 15:43 for his first goal of the season, assisted by Warren Foegele and Artem Zub, to tie the game at 1-1.

Neither side could break through during the third period or overtime. Senators goaltender Linus Ullmark stopped 20 of 21 shots, while Islanders netminder Semyon Varlamov turned aside 19 of 20 shots. Ottawa was 0 for 4 on the power play, and New York failed to score on three power-play chances. In the shootout, Drake Batherson, Brayden Schenn, Tim Stutzle, and Bo Horvat all failed to score before Pinto converted in the third round and Ullmark stopped Simon Holmstrom to seal the win.

The result moved the Senators to a 6-2-0 record on the season, while the Islanders shifted to 3-3-1 after collecting one point in the shootout loss.

The Islanders next host the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday. Ottawa remains at home to host the Florida Panthers on Wednesday.
