Danton Heinen scored two goals in the opening period to help the Vancouver Canucks earn a 6-3 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday night at United Center.
Heinen opened the scoring just 21 seconds into the game on a wrist shot for his first goal of the season, assisted by Teddy Blueger and Kiefer Sherwood. J.T. Miller doubled the lead with a power-play snap shot at 6:01 of the first period. Chicago answered at 9:25 when Ryan Donato scored on a snap shot, but Heinen restored the two-goal margin 81 seconds later by deflecting home his second of the night. Taylor Hall cut Vancouver's lead to 3-2 at 13:29 before Conor Garland scored on a wrist shot at 15:17, capping a six-goal opening frame with the Canucks ahead 4-2.
After a scoreless second period, the Canucks pulled away midway through the third. Brock Boeser converted a power play with a tip-in at 10:29, and Pius Suter scored his first goal of the season just 29 seconds later on a wrist shot to push the lead to 6-2. Tyler Bertuzzi scored on a power-play wrist shot for Chicago at 14:04 to close out the scoring.
Kevin Lankinen stopped 31 of 34 shots to earn the win for Vancouver, while Petr Mrazek made 24 saves on 30 shots for Chicago. Special teams favored the Canucks, who converted 2 of 3 opportunities on the power play and killed off four of five penalties against the Blackhawks.
The victory extended Vancouver's winning streak to three games and improved its record to 3-1-2 on the season. Chicago fell to 2-4-1 and is winless in its last two contests.
