Jacob Fowler turned aside 33 shots to lead the Montreal Canadiens to a 2-1 victory over the Winnipeg Jets at Princess Auto Stadium on Sunday.
Following a scoreless first period, Montreal broke the tie at 7:19 of the second period when Lane Hutson scored on a wrist shot set up by Noah Dobson and Cole Caufield. Kaiden Guhle expanded the advantage to 2-0 at 11:04 of the middle frame, beating Stuart Skinner with another wrist shot off assists from Caufield and Juraj Slafkovsky.
The Jets cut the deficit late in the third period. Isak Rosen scored his first goal of the season at 15:24 with a snap shot off feeds from Gabriel Vilardi and Haydn Fleury, but Winnipeg could not find the tying tally in the final minutes.
Fowler secured the win with 33 saves on 34 shots as Montreal killed off all four Winnipeg power plays. Skinner took the loss for the Jets after stopping 19 of 21 shots, and Montreal did not receive a single power-play opportunity in the contest.
The victory improved Montreal to 6-3-2 on the season and gave the Canadiens their second consecutive win. Winnipeg fell to 4-4-3 while extending its winless streak to five games (0-3-2).
Both teams return to the ice on Tuesday. The Canadiens visit the St. Louis Blues, while the Jets host the Florida Panthers.
