Roope Hintz scored the deciding goal in the fourth round of a shootout as the Dallas Stars edged the Colorado Avalanche 3-2 on Wednesday at Ball Arena. Hintz broke the tie before Casey DeSmith stopped Brock Nelson to seal the road victory for Dallas.

Following a scoreless opening frame, Colorado struck first at 4:55 of the second period when Gabriel Landeskog tipped in a feed from Nazem Kadri and Sam Malinski. Dallas responded at 15:03 of the period, tying the score at 1-1 on a Miro Heiskanen wrist shot set up by Mikko Rantanen and Thomas Harley.

Dallas grabbed the lead early in the third period when Arttu Hyry scored unassisted on a shorthanded backhand at 1:20 for his first goal of the season. The Avalanche countered at 8:21 of the final frame, as Nelson knotted the game 2-2 with a wrist shot assisted by Artturi Lehkonen and Kadri.

Neither team scored on the man advantage, with the Stars going 0 for 2 on the power play and the Avalanche finishing 0 for 4. DeSmith secured the victory by stopping 25 of 27 shots during play and turning aside three of four shootout attempts, while Colorado goaltender Scott Wedgewood took the overtime loss after making 20 saves on 22 shots.

The victory moved Dallas to a 3-3-1 regular-season record, while Colorado shifted to 4-2-1. The outcome also evened the season series between the clubs at 1-1 following Colorado's 3-2 win the previous day.

Up next, the Avalanche visit the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday, October 19, at 7:00 PM ET. The Stars return to action when they host the Boston Bruins on Tuesday, October 20, at 8:00 PM ET.
