Toronto Maple Leafs News & Updates

The Toronto Maple Leafs have announced the termination of Sheldon Keefe's role as head coach.

The team will immediately start looking for a new head coach.

Brad Treliving, the general manager, shared how hard it was to make this decision because of Keefe's exceptional qualities both as a coach and an individual.

The future of the rest of the coaching team is yet to be decided.

Keefe still has two more years on his contract starting from the 2024-25 season.

Keefe shared his thanks and admitted his shortcomings in achieving playoff success in a video on social media.

Treliving, Shanahan, and Pelley will hold a press conference on Friday to discuss the matter further.

Keefe, who took over from Mike Babcock in November 2019, had a successful stint with the Toronto Marlies, guiding them to win the Calder Cup.

During his time, the Leafs notched a record of 212-97-40 and managed back-to-back 50-win seasons, yet they could not secure playoff victories.

The loss to Boston in Game 7 overtime in the first round of the playoffs was pivotal in the decision to let Keefe go.

This move marks the first significant change under Treliving, who had previously renewed Keefe’s contract based on his vision for the team’s future.

The Leafs are focusing on leveraging the talents of core players like Matthews and Nylander to achieve playoff success.
