The Columbus Blue Jackets named Rick Nash as their new President of Hockey Operations on Friday.
Nash, who was the top pick in the 2002 NHL draft, spent his playing career with the Blue Jackets from 2002 to 2012, setting franchise records with 289 goals and 258 assists. After retiring in 2018 following stints with the New York Rangers and Boston Bruins, he returned to Columbus in June 2019 as a special assistant to the general manager, a role he served for two years before becoming the Director of Player Development.
General Manager Don Waddell praised Nash, describing him as an intelligent and essential part of the hockey operations team. Waddell highlighted Nash's dedication to the community and acknowledged him as a valuable resource since his arrival.
Nash, who served as the Blue Jackets' captain from 2008 to 2012, was honored as a five-time All-Star and received the Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy in 2004 for leading the NHL in goals. The team retired his jersey number, 61, in 2022.
The Blue Jackets also announced additional leadership changes, including the appointments of Zach Abdou and Basil McRae.
