Rickard Rakell scored the winning goal in the fourth round of a shootout to lift the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 2-1 victory over the Dallas Stars on Saturday at PPG Paints Arena.
Following two scoreless periods, Connor Dewar broke the deadlock at 1:57 of the third period with an even-strength backhand shot off an assist from Blake Lizotte. It was Dewar's first goal of the season and stood as the lone tally for Pittsburgh during regulation play.
Dallas answered late to salvage a point in the standings. Tyler Seguin scored his first goal of the season at 19:30 of the third period, tipping in a pass from Jason Robertson alongside Miro Heiskanen to level the score at 1-1 and send the contest into overtime.
The teams traded conversions through the opening three rounds of the shootout, with Ben Kindel and Sidney Crosby scoring for Pittsburgh while Seguin and Wyatt Johnston converted for Dallas. Rakell converted in the fourth round, and Arturs Silovs stopped Mikko Rantanen to seal the result.
Goaltenders controlled the low-scoring contest throughout regulation and overtime. Silovs stopped 24 of 25 shots to pick up the victory for Pittsburgh, while Stars goaltender Jake Oettinger made 20 saves on 21 shots in the overtime loss. Neither team found success on the man advantage, as Dallas finished 0 for 3 on the power play and Pittsburgh went 0 for 5.
The victory moved the Penguins to a 3-2-1 regular-season record, while the Stars moved to 2-2-1 after collecting one point from the overtime loss.
Pittsburgh visits the Utah Mammoth on Monday, October 19. Dallas returns to action when it hosts the Boston Bruins on Tuesday, October 20.
