Florida jumped out to an early two-goal lead in the first period. Barkov opened the scoring at 4:46 on a power-play slap shot, assisted by Aaron Ekblad and Carter Verhaeghe. Exactly 50 seconds later, Mackie Samoskevich doubled the advantage with an even-strength snap shot at 5:36, setup by Eetu Luostarinen.
The Panthers extended the margin late in the second period when Sam Reinhart scored a shorthanded goal on a snap shot at 17:04 with an assist from Barkov. Toronto responded on the same power play at 18:31, as Mitch Marner scored an unassisted wrist goal. However, Florida pulled away in the third period. Verhaeghe converted on the man advantage at 14:37 with a wrist shot off assists from Sam Bennett and Evan Rodrigues, and Bennett sealed the scoring with an empty-net wrist goal at 18:32, assisted by Verhaeghe and Matthew Tkachuk.
Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 23 of 24 shots to earn the win for Florida, while Toronto goaltender Anthony Stolarz took the loss after making 19 saves on 23 shots. The Panthers capitalized on the man advantage by finishing 2-for-5 on the power play, while also adding a shorthanded goal. The Maple Leafs went 1-for-3 on their power-play opportunities.
The victory moved Florida to a 13-9-1 record on the season and ended a four-game losing streak. Toronto dropped to 13-7-2, ending a four-game winning streak. Verhaeghe finished the night with three points on one goal and two assists, giving Florida a 1-0 advantage in the regular-season series between the two clubs.
