Adam Fantilli scored on the power play 59 seconds into overtime to lift the Columbus Blue Jackets to a 2-1 victory over the Vegas Golden Knights on Saturday at Nationwide Arena.
Columbus opened the scoring 11:51 into the first period when Denton Mateychuk beat Carter Hart with a backhand shot, assisted by Kent Johnson and Valeri Nichushkin. The Golden Knights answered before the opening intermission. Tomas Hertl tied the game at 17:13 of the first period, scoring his fifth goal of the season on a snap shot with assists from Braeden Bowman and Trevor Connelly.
Neither team scored during the second or third periods, leaving the game deadlocked at 1-1 heading into overtime. Fantilli ended the contest early in the extra session, wiring a slap shot past Hart on the power play at the 59-second mark off assists from Charlie Coyle and Johnson.
Cam Talbot stopped 26 of 27 shots to earn the victory for the Blue Jackets, while Hart took the overtime loss after making 18 saves on 20 shots. Columbus finished 1 for 3 on the power play and killed off Vegas's lone power-play opportunity. The Blue Jackets also held an edge in the faceoff circle, winning 35 of 64 draws.
The win pushed Columbus to a 4-5-0 record on the season. The Golden Knights shifted to 8-4-1, extending their winless streak to three games (0-2-1).
Both teams play next on Tuesday, October 27. The Blue Jackets visit the Philadelphia Flyers, and the Golden Knights return to action to host the Ottawa Senators.
